Students at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln are known to be hard-working, self-starters who rally as a team and don’t give up easily. “The students I have met that have participated in the Southwestern program always come out of it more confident and energized for new challenges and experiences,” says Dr. Larry Routh, Director of Career Services at UNL. “We have a healthy relationship with the sales leaders and corporate recruiters who lead and develop the students on our campus. They work with integrity and look for the right students who thrive when faced with a challenge, which is what you get with Southwestern,” says Routh.
Many students who participate in the Southwestern program one summer are excited for the opportunity to work in the student management program where they are able to learn how to train and motivate their own team of students. Morgan Wurdeman a third-year student majoring in Secondary Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, just completed her second summer. When asked what she gained, she said, “There are so many things; the biggest thing I got out of this summer was being able to help other students. I liked being a manager because instead of focusing on myself I was able to focus on how I can help other students do well by setting a good example and being a good role model.”
Southwestern prides itself on giving students more responsibility than most internships. While they are given room to learn by trial and error, the ins and outs of running a business, they also have student mentors who are there to help them along each step of the way. The development of students through this mentorship is a unique part of the Southwestern culture. Southwestern’s efforts have changed the lives of many successful students and alumni at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Since 1999 the UNL team has ranked in the top 25 of over 350 campuses worldwide each summer, profiting a grand total of over $4,000,000.
